September 2016 – Monmouth Reform Temple Religious School

From September through December 2016, I am teaching photography in the Religious School at Monmouth Reform Temple, Tinton Falls, New Jersey. Titled “Picturing My Jewish” this new, innovative Mitzvah Academy elective will involve 7th to 9th graders in learning experiences about how pictures “work”. By looking at and talking about wonderful photographs from Joel Meyerowitz’s “Seeing Things”, students will discover that their pictures are always about them because they come from each person’s unique way of seeing. An important goal in this class is to learn how to make “better” pictures, especially ones that show the important Jewish parts of their lives. At the completion of the course, students’ best pictures will be published on the internet or in a Blurb book.  Based on my own resources augmented with materials from the Aperture Foundation children’s programs, this will be an exciting new challenge and a transformative educational component for our children and Jewish Education generally.
